Purebred cats can run the gamut from very affectionate to extremely mean and there isn’t always a lot of consistancy across the board within even a single breed. It usually depends on the breeder and the lines they are using, and whether or not they breed for looks only or for both looks and temperament. I’ve seen some absolutely beautiful pure-bred cats that were so mean you couldn’t even pet them or pick them up. At cat shows you will sometimes see signs on some of the enclosures that say “Does Not Handle” for a reason.
That said, there’s a general stereotype that oriental breeds (siamese, tonkinese, oriental shorthair, etc) are supposed to be more “people-oriented” and “dog-like” than other breeds. I do not personally know if this is 100% true though the two or three pure-bred Siamese I’ve encountered in my life were fairly friendly (two or three is not really a representative sample though).
Cats are friendly if they are used to people handling them and have never been mistreated, generally. Some cats are naturally more affectionate than others, but you are usually going to get a friendly animal if it has been handled by humans since it was a kitten. Otherwise they tend to be a bit “wild” and often scared of people.
Your best bet is to go to the local animal shelter and spend some time with the cats and kittens they have. They usually have a room where you can sit and spend time with a cat or kitten you are interested in adopting. Find a cat that you can pick up, pet, and handle without it getting nervous or hissing/biting/scratching. If you find a calm cat this is the one you want to adopt and you will have a good feline buddy. Plus, you’ll be saving a life. ![]()

Yeah definetly go to a shelter. They often have signs on their cages saying which cats are good with kids, dogs, other cats etc. Just go to shelter with your kids and check it out. If you find one you like, they have rooms that you can go in and play with the kitty outside his cage. If the kitty isn’t aggresive and is playful and outgoing,go for it.

I’ll say that almost every breed is nice for kids! It doesn’t depend on the breed it depends on it’s own personality. ![]()

Yeah, just like people, all cats are different. I suggest you go to the animal shelter and pick out one that you and your kids love.
