We have 20 feral cats that live inside with us. We have Mom, Dad who is also the grandfather and all the litters. Mom was over 2 years old when we finally trapped her. A very smart, elusive cat and extremely wild. We were told by feral cat rescues and the local shelter that she would be impossible to tame and that we should set her free or euthanize her…. She is lying on the back of my chair as I write this and sleeps by my face at night. We can handle all but one of these ferals. It was a long process with many of them but it is possible and they should be given that chance. If you’d like to know how we tamed ours, email me.

Wow!!! Thankfully,we don't have that many here.Mama has a den somewhere,I think, with a new litter.I haven't found it yet. It's not on the property we live on(we rent).I think it's on the property next door. Her son from a previous litter is still around.I talk to him daily, but he won't let me touch him yet.I'm working on that. Mama comes in to eat sometimes, but not very often. So,I'm very thankful that she is so adept at hunting.I've seen her eating several dead mice that she has just caught & killed. Her new litter is 10 days old,and I'm hoping she moves them back to my shed(she has used it before for raising her babies)soon.I want to get my hands on them, and start socializing them before they open their eyes.

It doesn't take long to multiply. Some feral colonies around here are 30 to 50. Animal Allies have volunteers who trap, neuter and release as long as they have a caretaker who can supply daily food and shelter for the winters.

I don’t have a screened in porch, unfortunately.I would try to keep them on my porch, anyway, but we have to walk our dogs, because we don’t have a fenced yard.We have a dog that kills cats,so I am keeping them as far from my porch as I can, at this time.

Thank you for your suggestion, though. It was a good idea.

i think you should hang up signs for the cats and take them to the vet. mabe find a good spot to put food and that has shelter and that you can prut a litter box for them to use.

I called animal control, and 3 of the young’uns have been picked up.
We kept the cages for a week,to no avail.Mom has never been touched by human hands, unfortunately. She is a very smart girl, and will never be caught.Roller(daddy) is very tame, and has fathered many, many litters. When I can afford it I will be taking him in to be fixed.Lil Man(oldr kitten)is wild like his mama.He used to let me pet him while he ate with his back to me,but no more,Don’t know why,or what changed. There is still a young kit with mama.I’m wondering if she’s nursing this kit, because he kit doesn’t eat the food I put out.Mama goes to the kit(Electra)when she’s done eating. She’s moved the kit under the shed, and I can’t get to it.
I’m thinking about calling animal control again to get her out of here.I think Mama is pregnant again. She usually has a litter every winter, and every summer. So,we’re almost due,if she is.I’m also tryng to make her a nice warm birthing place for this winter.
I’ll keep y’all informed. Thanks for all the advise.

Don't give up on Momma. Are you using a havahart trap? Put the trap inside of a box large enough that the mechanism will still work but as close to the size of the trap as possible. We used the box the trap came in and cut the box where the mechanisms were. Use canned, smelly food inside the trap. No food outside of the trap. Sometimes as cruel as this sounds, you have to stop putting food out for 24 hours - then set the trap. They must be hungry to entice them into that trap. She WILL get trapped if you don't give up.

Found a new home for Dad(Roller),and all the kits from her last litter. So,now we have a new litter, and Lil Man to tame and socialize and adopt out.I would take them in myself, but we have 3 dogs who do NOT like cats at all. So,I've been using them porch of the empty house next door to put their food and water dishes every day,2x a day. thanks for all the answers.I'll keep y'all in the loop.

I won’t call animal control to try to get her anymore.I’ve decided to tame and find a new home for her older son,Lil Man,and tame and find homes for her kittens. Then she will be the only cat here and I can finally get some weight on her.She is so skinny right now!

Please stop suggesting that I have any animal euthanized.I’m totally a “no kill”individual.

Thank God you care! Too many people just give up on them. She probably is loaded with worms.

So,how would I get wormer into her?She rarely comes home for food these days.I think she’s eating lots of mice for milk production, even though I put out her vitamin food every morn with her dry food.At night, they get dry and just wet.I went to the store and bought a bottle of cat vitamins. So,every morn I break up 2 vitamins, smash’em up,and add it to their wet food(thus it is called vitamin food).I don’t know if she comes in at night,or not. But,every morn I get up and check the food bowls, and they look like they’ve been washed, even the water bowl. It’s weird.

Please tell me how I can get wormer into her?You think I could add it to their wet food?
I’m sure Lil Man could probably use some too.

are the cats still acting wild? if they are, you should bring them to your local animal shelter, where they may be euthanized.
If they are great cats, but you have to tame them, place them in a small but comfortable room with their litterbox, food, water. they will not want to soil on their little ”house” and will go to the litterbox instead.

this should work. if you still have problems, you can send a letter to one of the behavior experts on catchannel.com, such as dr pam elaine wexler. you can also read the book think like a cat. it is a great cat behavior book.

John, we have had wonderful results with taming feral cats ranging in age from 7 weeks, 4 months, 6 months, a year and over 2 years old. If someone is willing to take the time it is unfair to say "take them in to be euthanized."
