There is no certain age to obtain a pet, althogh young children do have a tendancy to frighten cats by let’s say, pulling their tails, screeching in their ears etc. but if you teach the young child to have respect and show care for the animal, I don’t see why not.
Also, it helps to teach the child that it is a big responsability to keep a pet and that they must help to feed it and clean up after it.

heres my saying is your 5yr old nice or abusive to any animal ??? and if He she is not heres some pinpoints did you know that the pound or the humane society lets you interact wih the cat!! but the pound puts a chip in all pets nuders them and helps you treat any diseases they have but the pound helps you save a life and its half the cost if you do plan on a cat !!!

I agree with all above posters, the child needs to understand this is a living being and there are responsibilities.
Could you do a “test run” with a friend’s cat for the afternoon? Or look into local human societies for “classes” about different animals, their needs and bounderies.
Perhaps being 5 and energetic, a kitten would be better than a cat for your child. He/she could play with the animal who would have lots of energy.
In the meantime, you can drive home your message at your local library. Cat in Search of a Friend, by Meshack Asare is a good one. You can also find pet care books at a child’s level.
