grieving and new cat

5 Answers  |  Asked By: Ephelps   7

One of my 4 year old brother cats died 3 months ago. They were very close and the survivor was the caretaker. For 2-3 weeks he cried and looked for his brother (although he saw the body) but since then has stopped that behavior. He has changed somewhat - he’s more affectionate with me than ever and has adopted some of his brother’s quirks. Question: should I introduce a new cat? kitten or 1-2 year old? boy or girl? was a stray or from a good home?

i was just in a very similar situation…..i had to put down one of my cats about a month ago and the older cat was very upset but since then he craves attention from me all the time…so i went and got a 9 year old female from a good home and now my cat preston is peeing all over my things because hes upset about having to share the attention so just beware that your cat could get very upset with a new cat in the house……..if u do get a new cat introduce them very slowly…keep the new cat in a seperate room dont just let it run free…trust me i learned my lesson

I AGREE WITH U AMYCAT I WOULD ALSO PUT THE NEW CAT INTO A DIFFERENT ROOM AND INTRODUCE THEM REAL SLOWLY,SO THAT THE CATS WON'T FIGHT.

thanks so much. I think I'll find a time when my daughter can be here for 3-4 days so we can give both cats attention. And I'll keep the new kitty confined for a while.

I would not try to introduce a new pet. They are grieving and need the attention. If you do decied to get a new cat be sure to be prepared to give him (not the new cat) extra attention. I would also put the new cat in a separate room and only allow them to be together for short periods of time in the beginning. Work the time up. First cat in home still more attention.

I've decided to wait until we have grieved for 4 full months. At this point, I think that my cat is doing fine - I'm the one who is still very sad! I'll do whatever it takes to have a "happy family" again. My existing cat did love havinghis brother around - he was the caretaker. Hopefully he can awaken those instincts again for a new younger cat. I appreciate everyone's advice.

IF YOU ARE GOING TO BRING A NEW CAT INTO YOUR HOME WITH THE OLD ONE YOU COULD RUB THE NEW CAT DOWN WITH A DRY TOWEL AND PLACE THE TOWEL BY YOUR OLD CATS FOOD BOWL OR WHEREVER HE MAY GO TO FREQUENTLY IN THE HOME.THIS WAY THE OLD CAT CAN PICK UP ON THE SCENT OF THE NEW CAT.AND YOU SHOULD CONTINUE TO DO THIS UNTIL THEY BECOME FAMILAR WITH EACHOTHER.

good thought. I've been reading about the importance of scent. I thought I might bring a towel with the scent of my older cat to have in the carrying case when I go get the new cat.
