I’ve seen them called “domestic medium hair” by shelters. I’m not sure if that’s a real term or one just made up, but cats can have all lengths of fur. Some like Persians have really thick, thick, thick long fur, then you have cats like angoras that have long fur but it’s not nearly so puffy and thick, then you have short plush coated cats, cats with slick, short fur and everything in between. It’s really more a continuum rather than an either-or kind of thing.
My old cat was a calico. My cat now is a tabby-point (she’s the cat in my icon)

tortoiseshell cats are orange and black (sometimes peach and grey but usually orange and black).

what's the difference between "tortoiseshell" and "calico"? or is it the same?

Tortoiseshell cats have the black and orange mixed in small bits all over their body and usually have little, if any, white patches. A calico is typically a partially or mostly white cat with large distinct patches of orange and black.

Tortoiseshells are what i call “dark Calicos.” the ones i have had here any way, are black allover with some white feet, and a white stripe on the nose, and orange spots/patches. i’m not saying that they are all like that but those are the ones that i see. and there are calico males out there but they are rare.
