What is a miniature/dwarf cat? What about munchkins?

4 Answers  |  Asked By: toymachine   6

What is a miniature/dwarf cat? What about a Munchkin? Are they healthy and active pets? They are adorable, but I feel like their short legs would limit their activity and their ability to live a long, fun, feline lives.

I would feel bad if they were bred to be adorable but they couldn’t do all the things normal cats like to do, like jump onto high things, climb, etc because of their short legs. Were they bred for any specific purpose or just for cuteness?

Does anyone have any experience with these? Are they good pets for city apartments?

Here is a good site that you should check out about dwarf cats: http://www.pictures-of-cats.org/dwarf-cats-and-miniature-cats.html

Dwarf cats are domestic cat breeds which have the condition of dwarfism due to a genetic mutation.

They are said to have more health problems than other cats, but are still generally healthy.

Hope this helps, Johnisgood2

They were bred to be an “exotic” cat, and to capture the attention of feline lovers who wanted something a bit more “interesting” that their normal housecat.

The munchkin is a relatively new breed created by a mutation that causes achondroplasia, or more probably hypochondroplasia as the skull size is unaffected, resulting in cats with abnormally short legs. The breed originated in 1983 when Sandra Hochenedel found an extremely short-legged black cat living under a trailer in Louisiana. This cat, named Blackberry, was pregnant and half of her kittens were born short-legged. One of Blackberry’s kittens, a tomcat named Toulouse, became the father of a breeding program that established the breed in North America. They were created by mutation.
