The hair just gets matted together, there is nothing wrong. Keep on brushing him/her everyday...
Almost every summer we shave our cat so he isn't hot and doesn't get matted.

Most likely you cat has worms, but if you go to a pet store they have a medicine you can put in their food every night and then they will stop doing that
