Remembering and Honoring Your Pet

By: S.F. Heron  |  9 / 1 / 2008  |  18 Comments

Pet owners feel incredible grief when losing a companion animal. That sassy animal that woke you at all hours, demanded your attention, and provided unconditional friendship is gone. The soft clicking sound of kitty claws on the kitchen floor no longer greets you every morning when you make coffee. That favorite sleeping spot is vacant when you glance there 100 times a day.

Just like the loss of any family member, it takes time to come to terms with the death of a companion animal. Your sadness is your own. Your grief is your own and the amount of time it takes is totally dependent on you.

Remembrances for your deceased pet are an integral part of dealing with your pet’s death. Amidst your loneliness and grief, it’s important to consider the very best things about your animal. Part of the healing process is pulling out those wonderful memories, exploring how they make you feel, and secreting them away in a very special place in your heart.

Recognizing the importance of remembering cherished pets, the International Association of Pet Cemeteries and Crematories (IAOPCC) designated the second Sunday in September as National Pet Memorial Day. On this day, or any day, you can visit pet cemeteries, make a tribute book, view photos, or hold a memorial service for your lost pet.

Tributes to your pet can take many forms, from scrapbooks to remembrance jewelry. You can honor your pet’s memory in so many ways, including more public displays such as posting notices in the paper or creating an online memorial. Here are some suggestions to help you choose a tribute for your animal that is special and personal, in the hope that it helps you move through your grief.

Memorial Scrapbook

In the weeks following your loss, you’ll be reminiscing about the fun times with your pet. Collect your pictures and create a memory book of your pet. You can purchase scrapbooks, paper and stickers at any craft store. This is a wonderful, healing exercise that will remind you of everything you loved the most about your companion animal.

Memorial Picture Frames

Print out your favorite pictures of your animal and create a tribute in frames. Special engraved frames are available online or simply use regular frames for your memorial. It’s a gentle reminder every day of everything good that comes from being a loving pet owner.

Remembrance Journal

Coping with the often-intense grief of losing a beloved pet is rough. Maybe you don’t feel you can talk to anyone about how empty your heart is. Try putting pen to paper in a remembrance journal to help you through the grieving process.

Keepsake Jewelry

These beautiful symbols of the love are a wonderful gift for any grieving pet lover. Bracelets, necklaces, and charms are available at many online sites and provide some solace with a daily reminder of a beloved companion animal.

Memorial Service

Whether you plan to bury your animal or have him cremated, collect your family and friends and have a tribute service to. This is especially good for children to help them deal with the loss. Allow everyone to share stories and memories. Read a portion of Rainbow Bridge, a wonderful poem about the “bridge” where beloved companion animals wait for their owners to join them in Heaven.

Just this side of heaven is a place called Rainbow Bridge.

When an animal dies that has been especially close to someone here, that pet goes to Rainbow Bridge.
There are meadows and hills for all of our special friends so they can run and play together.
There is plenty of food, water and sunshine, and our friends are warm and comfortable.

All the animals who had been ill and old are restored to health and vigor; those who were hurt or maimed are made whole and strong again, just as we remember them in our dreams of days and times gone by.
The animals are happy and content, except for one small thing; they each miss someone very special to them, who had to be left behind.

They all run and play together, but the day comes when one suddenly stops and looks into the distance. His bright eyes are intent; His eager body quivers. Suddenly he begins to run from the group, flying over the green grass, his legs carrying him faster and faster.

You have been spotted, and when you and your special friend finally meet, you cling together in joyous reunion, never to be parted again. The happy kisses rain upon your face; your hands again caress the beloved head, and you look once more into the trusting eyes of your pet, so long gone from your life but never absent from your heart.

Then you cross Rainbow Bridge together….

Living Memorial

Capture the life and vitality of your animal by planting a tree or shrub in remembrance of your pet. This is a sure way to remind you of happy times. It’s also a thoughtful gift for a friend or relative who has lost a treasured pet.

Personalized Grave Markers

If you have chosen to bury your pet on your own property or in a pet cemetery, why not create or purchase a personalized grave marker? Stepping stone kits are available at most craft stores and can be fashioned to place on the grave. Beautiful engraved stone markers can be ordered online. In addition, more traditional granite and marble headstones are also available.

Online Memorials

Many grieving pet owners choose to post pictures of their beloved pets online. Memorial sites have sprung up all over the web, with many allowing free posting to grieving pet owners. You can usually post a written tribute and a picture of your animal.

Donations

Choose a favorite charity and make a donation in remembrance of your pet. Some pet owners choose to make a yearly donation to honor the memory of their beloved pet. Or if you prefer, make a donation of pet supplies to the local humane society or rescue organization in your pet’s name.

OK just two nights ago my beautiful child “Techie” died in my arms. I have unfortunately been through this before, and it never gets any easier. But I noticed that, once I accepted that animals, just like people, go to another realm after ‘death’ and never really leave us, it became easier to grieve. I have to say, that if you create a lot of memorials of your children, you are only holding on to what they were - instead of accepting the beautiful new thing they are becoming. Cats are angels, and they continue to be long into their next 8 lives!

You know what, dp? I lost 2 cats to the pet food recall. Their ashes sit in wooden boxes on my mantel. I’m not ready to let go. It’s tangible proof for me that yes they are gone but yes, I am coping with it.

Grief is so individual and especially for our animals. They really are just the delightful angels that touch our lives for such a short time.

My deepest condolences for your loss.

I lost my boy (cat) shadow almost 2 years ago now and still miss him so much I broght him to the vet after him not feeling well, loosing weight ect. my vet had taken an xray and we found a tumor in his stomach I had to let go. I cried for days and I still miss him so much, my husband and our girls sat together and looked over pictures of Shadow from when he was a baby and his growing years it was such a comfort but I still miss him so much he was so unique and so special. We still have our other cats Jessie is the oldest since shadow who was her best friend and I worry about her as she is almost 17 and I am so scared of loosing her. We have rescued cats and a dog and loved them unconditionally until we found them good homes and that letting go that way was hard enough. I still think somehow Shadow lives through our one boy (cat) Ricki as he is so much like Shadow’s personality & even though Ricki is unique and special in his own way it comforts me just the same.

spirit was only a kitten when that happened. my cat shadow was so cute. the funny thing was that she was scared of shadows. her and tiger both died of getting hit by a car. tiger was a name that really fit her. she looked like tiger off of winney the pooh. all together we had about ten diferent cats. my brothers cat paches, was the friendlyest cat we’ve had so far. she ran away last year. my cat dina hasn’t died yet but she almost did. she got hit by a car, flu back, got her paw stuck in the bak tire rim, and flu back again. after that she hit the gravle on the side of the road and ran off. once we found her she couldn’t move. she was in to much pain. it scared me have to death. i thought she was goiung to die. i’m glad she didn’t die. if she did, my other cat angel would be so lonley.

Hobbs passed away from kidney failure on 3/30/09 — my hubby and I held him and talked to him as he passed. Now he doesn’t hurt anymore and cry in pain.

I’ll miss you Bubba Bears — I’m blessed to have been your human!

I bought my daughter her first kitty when she was 7. She had been just begging for the longest time but I wanted her to be old enough to treat it properly and not maul it like toddlers tend to. She promised (don\’t we all!) to feed it, clean up after it, play with it! I went to an actual pet store (don\’t have anymore of those around anymore thank goodness). They had a few kittens available. I picked her up from school and took her there. She was so esctatic! We looked at them and wanted all of them but she ended up picking the most beautiful grey/black tiger with a white bib and white feet! Of course, she named him \”Mittens\”. Through the years, Mittens ate my hair while I sat on my couch (he loved the smell of my shampoo I guess!), ran to meet us as a family when we returned from school, work, etc. Allowed us to love him and pet him all we wanted. He was definitely our baby. As we welcomed other pets into our home over the years, he was never forgotten nor received less love. His nicknames were many but out of respect for his place in our family his last nickname was \”El Senor\” ! On June 25, 2009, my daughter found Mitty under a spare bed in our house. His body was still warm and he had apparently been drooling. His eyes were open. He was not breathing. Beep, the next eldest in the home, was there with El Senor lying beside him, seemingly comforting him during his last few hours. Samantha cried uncontrollably and has not gotten over the pain of losing the first pet she owned from baby to geriatric to the finality of life–death. She curled him up in his favorite sleeping position (fetal position of course), sweetly closed his eyes, closed his mouth. I stood there with love, grief but pride at my 20 year old daughter care for her beloved Mitty. She kissed each of his feet and told him he had beautiful feet and thanked him for being such a great kitty. She just graduated college this past spring and this showed me she has chosen the best career for her. She is a Veterinary Technician. Mitty was buried on our property and she placed stones in the shape of a heart on his \”plot\” so he could not get lost. We placed wildflowers and hugged and cried and talked to Mitty and God and prayed for him to be well, and young again, and to wait for us. Mitty helped my daughter grow up. We have been blessed for having him in our lives.

Hey ya\’ll, I am a 12-year-old girl and I adore cats so much. This is my baby girl Patches Marie Hammer, who is 3 years old and when she dies, I know I am going to cry my eyes out even though I will probably be in my 20\’s. Whenever she is fully awake and we pet her, she gets up and walks away. The only time she likes it when we pet her is when she is really tired. I have another cat, Midnight James Hammer, who is 11 years old, and, since he has been here since I was 1 year-old, I will never stop grieving. I know someday I will look back at my baby boy and girl and won\’t even cry. To this day I still cry over the cat that died when I was 3 years old. That was 9 years ago! Kitty(that was her name) only bit me once! She loved us dearly(I was born 6 year after my sister and 8 years after my brother and was the last child of the family) and was black and white(just like Midnight). So, if you think you will never stop crying, you will. Oh, and I will, even if I\’m the only one of the family, will create a tombstone for my babies. Plus, I read some of the stories, especially the Mittens one, and started to cry. Good luck everybody.
