Question Writing Guidelines

By: Catsdotcom  |  9 / 6 / 2008  |  32 Comments

Because of all your helpful questions and answers Cats.com has become an enormous database of cat information. This is great news! Our large collection of questions strengthens our search engine and makes it easier for people to come to the site and find the answers you’ve already provided.

Therefore, we wanted to give you a quick guide to writing questions to help further the goal of adding to this great arsenal of cat help.

When you type in a question and hit “Search,” previously written questions with similar words will show. You might even want to try simply entering in a keyword like “hairballs” or “sneezing” to find some directly related content. We suggest taking a look at these before sending in a new question, as your question may have already been answered. It also might be helpful to review the other questions so that when and if you do submit yours, you know what additional information to include.

Check out the Cats.com articles, too!

When you perform a search, there is a secondary tab that actually contains related articles to your question! We have some great experts writing about cat topics on Cats.com and you may find what you are looking for within these articles to be sure to check them out.

Submitting questions

When submitting a question, the more you follow the guildelines the more people will find your question both to answer it and to use as reference. The Question Title should include the topic of your question so that members know generally what you are asking about before reading the full post. Make sure to include key topics in the title question. In the Question Message include any other useful information such as age of your cat, pre-existing conditions, descriptions of odd behavior and symptoms, how long a problem has been going on etc.

Categories are also important to designate because experts and members may travel to the category page in which their expertise lies to look for new questions to answer. If your Cat Health question isn’t categorized as such, the Cat Health experts may not notice it.

Keywords are also essential in search and will help experts find your question and other members find your question they might also be looking to have answered. Remember, you can search Cats.com by putting keywords into the search box. If you have a question about your cat’s runny nose and pink eyes, it’s useful to have those words in the title and in the keywords. Hint : You don’t need to put the word “cat” in the keywords, it is implied in all posts.

Here is an example of a question that could use some more details, and keywords:

Cats are cool by nature, and noble too! they are graceful and not so needy. what a perfect balance. I do love them and they are perfect companions.Sure some of them have quite different personalities - a few scratches for me here and there- but that’s just them trying to show their independence, and who to say love doesn’t hurt? :-)
I do have the upmost respect for those of you who do try their best to rescue them and find them homes. It s why GOD put you on this earth in the first place. No doubt about it.On behalf of the feral cats, I thank you. I saved many of them myself and I love them just as much as I love my Persians, may be more. It ’s all worth it. You know what I’m talking about. Keep doing the noble work my animal-defending friends all around the world!

We have a 3 month old Black/Grey/White tabby. He is a beautiful animal. We have had only one problem and that is he has an intestinal problem. Took to vet and medicine worked for a week or so but it is back. Got a second batch of medicine but intend to take him back to the vet tomorrow.
QUESTION: We have been trying to “teach” him a few simple things but have had little success. [I had a dog years ago and thought I couldn't teach him. However, as he got older then I could. He was "big" when we got him, but I guess inside he was still a puppy.] Could it be the same with a kitten?

I had heard that a pet was good for older people. I fit that category, being almost 77. A month ago we got a two month old Tabby kitten. He has brought me much joy and more contentment. My abilities to do things has become limited and I suffer from depression. However, Simba has made a big change in my life. I enjoy petting him every morning and throughout the day. At times he will lay on my chest and let me pet him.

He is a pure joy so I can see why they say a pet helps older people like myself.

if someone asked me I would say cats are smarter than dogs! they have the common sense to say no . They are harder to train and they don’t suck up and bother you allt eh time! The have a mind of their own! GO CATS!

How often can I bath my 4 months old kitten? Was thinking of bathing him once a week. Is it O.K for him? Will he catch cold?

Dont wash your kitten a lot, as he might get sick easily. Every two weeks should make the cut for you. He is only four months, and you dont wanna stress out his body.

I am new to this site also. I have a female cat 6 years young named Sugar Girl, I am going to get a new kitty soon & was wondering if it is better to get a male or a female. I was told that 2 female cats do not get along. I would rather have a female but I don\’t want any added problems.

I am also new to this and at this point I am willing to try and get answers anywhere I can. My friend has been caring for feral cats for about 5 years now..when she gets to befriend them, she gets them shots and fixed. However, this one has gotten pregnant twice in the past three months but the mother cat just lets them die. Any idea why? By the way, my friend is now out of work for the past 8 months due to the fact of having lung cancer and going through treatments, which is why she has not had money to get these cats fixed. Again, any advice would be great!! I had thought that maybe it was because one of the other feral cats may have been related to her, therefore having a problem with inbred kittens. Is this possible?

I too am a new member. I am confused as to where questions are posted? My -5- year old Calico has used her box since she was a kitten. It has always has the same type \”crystals\” litter. As it is summer now, we let her out to play alot. I still see that she uses her box for urine but she does not have bowel movements in it the past couple of weeks. This seems strange to me. Any suggestions?? Thanks all, Tom….
